I just finished watching this well done PSA (Writers note VERY FOUL LANGUAGE DO NOT WATCH IN PRESCENCE OF CHILDREN OR THE EASILY OFFENDED) by a group called Just Not Sports. It’s part of their #MoreThanMean campaign to increase awareness about harassment of women in sports.
Not surprisingly, people say really horrible things to femalesports journalists from behind the protection of their computer screens.
The main message is, “If you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face, don’t say it at all.
I think you could easily adopt the golden rule to online interactions. That is, “Do onto others as you would have them do unto you” or, “treat people they way you want to be treated.
This applies to social media. Whether you are managing an account, posting from your own account or commenting on someone else’s post keep the following in mind.
Would you say this to your mother? Would you say this if you knew you would see the recipient in church, or the grocery store?
Would you like it if someone said it, or wrote it, to you?
If the answer is no, don’t type it online.
